In Australia, Filing cabinets are usually designed to store Foolscap Suspension files to prevent document edges from bending. The cabinets these days are designed to hang the file in the drawer. Filing cabinets do not accommodate the paperwork to sit directly on the bottom of the drawer. If this is required a tambour door cupboard is designed for this type of storage. Vertical or Lateral filing cabinets are available in both metal and melamine finishes.

A3 Filing cabinets are used to store the larger file. Cabinets are available in both metal and melamine finishes.

A4 Filing cabinets are rarely made. Some mobile pedestals do accommodate the A4 suspension file to be stored in the file drawer.

Card cabinets are made to store medical history cards usually size 8" x 5". Due to the weight that is stored they are made of metal. They are often referred to as Duplex Cabinets.

CD cabinets are made to store Cds. Due to the weight that is stored they are made of metal.
